Various Poems By Kristen N. Fox
A Hole to the Sky
There's a hole to the
sky
Where that tree used to be;
Blown over by the winds of change
It tried to stand
stoic,
Gripping the ground with fierce determination,
But the universe has a saying - "When
it's time,
You can either go willingly,
Or you can go."
The trunk finally
gave,
Splintering apart like dry kindling,
Severing the tree from its roots.
City workers took the entire day to
free it from its dying tangle with the overhead wires.
A last ditch effort at denial.
And now there's a
hole to the sky.
I can see so much farther.
Driven by Distraction
Distractions leap maniacally
Snipering us in our moments
Whatever screams loudest
Or flashes brightest
Wins our attention
Wresting it from our centers In sadistic
triumph.
The fight or flight
survival instinct
We now use against ourselves
Manipulating and coercing
Because
That's what we're supposed to do
That's just how life IS Isn't it?
Meeting your own version
Of physical reality
From the belly of your truth
Is an independence
Generally frowned upon
As if an activity our civilized societies
Are embarrassed to acknowledge
Like Crazy Uncle Wilbur
Who chuckles all day
At nothing
Well, nothing THEY can see.
They judge HIM distracted.
But he's the one smiling.
A Re-Minder
The mind forgets so easily -
Looking to the past
For proof that the present
Has no future.
Looking to the personality
For proof that
We are all alone.
Looking out at the
world
For proof that
We are all separate.
It's time to re-mind
yourself.
Remember
Even when the mind forgets
That you can't truly be hurt by an
illusion.
Remember
Even when the mind tries too hard
That the universe Is in your corner.
Remember
Even when the mind believes in time
That time is plastic
And is your ally.
Remember
Even when the mind thinks itself complete
That we are always more
And we are always becoming.
Remember
Even when the mind knows fear
That fear is just forgetting
Who you really are.
Off and Running
The scamper of dry brown
leaves across the pavement sounds like rain,
only it's sunny,
and I just saw a white butterfly.
The leaves scuttle
down the street like marathon runners in Boston,
moving busily,
as a unit.
A new breeze ruffles
the tall grass in the front yard and another group of marathoners
is off and running.
I wonder where they
think they're going.
When Life Suddenly
Gets REAL
We scare ourselves with
fears
dressing them in different clothes
for different occasions
Yet we keep the fears
and replay the feelings
over and over again
until we finally grow tired
of our dramas
and the void
The empty space where
love belongs
Yet love is too big
to be contained
in a space that once held
our judgments
our control
our fears
The mind tells you
better the fear you know
better the fear you can control
better the fear you can predict t
han the VITALITY and REALNESS of love
Gather your courage
You can't sit on the
fence forever.
